Fun Facts About Thai Culture

There are over 200,000 Thais that live in the United States. Many of them live in close communities to each other. This has made it so that Thai culture is still celebrated and traditions can continue to be passed down from generation to generation.

These traditions could include Thai catering from our Thai restaurant in Wellesley for an event, the celebration of holidays, or performing other Thai traditions. There are so many great things about Thai culture that many people in the United States are unaware of. Here are some fun facts about Thai culture that you may not know about!

The Food

Some of the most popular and delicious Thai food in Wellesley can’t even be found in Thailand! Several foods were invented in Thailand but can now only be found in the United States. Some of these foods include American fried rice, Kanom Krok Singapore, Kanom Jeen, Kanom Tokya, and Lod Chong Singapore.

Beer with Ice

In the United States, we don’t often drink beer with ice, however, in Thai culture they do! Since the weather in Thailand is often extremely hot, it’s common to bring a bucket of ice when someone orders a beer. Thais became used to this and now mostly always have ice with their beer!

Longest City Name in the World

As you know, the capital of Thailand is Bangkok, however, this isn’t the actual name of the city. Locals refer to it as Krung Thep, but this still isn’t the actual name of the city. The official name of the city is the longest city name in the world and its 169 letters!

“Krungthep Mahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit”

This translates to: “The Great City of Angels, the Supreme Repository for Divine Jewel, the Great Land Unconquerable, the Grand and Prominent Realm, the Royal and Delightful Capital City full of Nine Noble Gems, the Highest Royal Dwelling and Grand Palace, the Divine Shelter and Living Place of the Reincarnated Spirit”
